Accidents at Work:
Manual HandlingManual handling injuries account for a high proportion of accidents suffered in the workplace. Over 48,000 people every year suffer a manual handling injury resulting in them being absent for more than 3 days. These include over 4000 injuries described by the Health and Safety Executive as major injuries.
Does a manual handling injury just mean a lifting injury? No is the answer as a manual handling operation includes lifting. However it also "means any transporting or supporting of a load" This includes lifting, as well as putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving the load. A load can include all sorts of different things such as boxes, furniture, deliveries, components for assembly and even people. There is no restriction on how much or little can be lifted. The employer must however reduce the risk of injury to the lowest level possible.
Unfortunately people suffer manual handling injuries across a wide range of different industries especially where employers have failed to carry out basic risk assessments. Industries vary from factories to shops and offices, from agriculture to construction, from hospitals to schools, and from catering to home deliveries services. No work is excluded
