Disaster Group Actions

Hugh James is widely recognised as a firm with experience and expertise in handling and leading group actions following disasters.

We have acted on behalf of victims and the families of victims all over the UK who have had the terrible misfortune to be injured and caused to suffer loss following some of the most high profile transport disasters of recent times.

Establishing what those caught up in these disasters want and need when we are approached is our first priority – compensation is not always at the top of the list and is rarely the clients’ only objective. ( click to see Gerona example )

We listen to our clients and do all we can to help them put their lives back together as soon as possible after the disaster they have been through. For example we can arrange biopsychosocial rehabilitation which might encompass trauma counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and even speech therapy.

We can help clients in their quest to establish explanations for what caused the disaster they were involved in. We do this by working with investigating authorities and representation at public enquiries as well as exploring the various other avenues that might be open to clients in these circumstances.

We can facilitate clients meeting with other clients who shared their experience which has proven to be something many of our clients have embraced and found to be very helpful. Where it is required we can also assist clients to establish support groups and action groups – strength in numbers is often an advantage in taking on well resourced opponents whether within or outside the litigation process.

Inevitably disasters attract media attention and we are able to protect clients from unwanted intrusion as well as afford them an opportunity to put across their experience where that is desired.

When it comes to pursuing claims for compensation we have unrivalled experience in successfully pursuing some of the most technically complex group actions of recent times but we take pride in the fact that our clients are always fully aware of what is happening in their claim and that we will always seek to conclude their case as quickly as is reasonably practicable.

We offer free initial specialist advice and are happy to take appropriate cases on a ‘no win no fee’ basis. We are also one of only a small group of law firms authorised by the Legal Service Commission to take appropriate group action cases on Public Funding Certificates (formerly Legal Aid).
